What is indian head Massage?

Indian Head Massage, also known as Champi, Champissage and Shiro-Abhyanga, is thought to have been in existence for over five thousand years.

It is part of the system of medicine known as Ayurveda (a Sanskrit word meaning "Science of Life"). Ayurveda is a complete health system which originated in India, incorporating diet, exercise, yoga, meditation, herbal remedies and massage.

Indian Head Massage also has its influences from the style of massage commonly practised by Indian women on family and friends as part of every day life and passed down through families from mother and grand mother to daughter.

The techniques now known as Indian head Massage were formalised and introduced to the west by Mr Narendra Mehta. Mr Mehta researched, documented and trained in the many types of head massage available in India and introduced what we now know as Indian Head Massage to the UK in the 1980s.

A typical treatment is carried out with the receiver sitting upright on a low backed chair. The techniques can be applied either through the clothes or with oils directly on the skin. Techniques are applied to the upper back, shoulders, arms and hands and then working up through the neck, scalp and face. The treatment is concluded with Chakra balancing (In Ayurveda, Chakras are the energy centres of the body).
